Car accidents are one of the leading causes of death in our country. Accidents can happen for multiple reasons, including, texting, driving drunk, distracted, tiredness, speeding, negligence or reckless driving among others. But who is to blame? This post is provided by Vreeland’s Rockaway auto insurance programs.
We all do things in our cars we probably shouldn’t. All of us. But, in a survey of 2,506 licensed drivers by Ford Motor Co, 99% described themselves as safe drivers. In fact, they are more concerned with the behavior of other drivers around them.
Of that group, according to the Wall Street Journal, 76% acknowledged to eating while driving, 55% admitted they exceed speed limits, 54% talk on their phones, and more than a third 37% said they drive when they are too tired.
Automakers have taken this into account when designing new models. 9 out of 10 people in the survey were interested in cars that could assist in slowing the vehicle if it had a system that could detect an impending collision. 8 in 10 would like systems that pulled the car back into the lane if it drifted outside the lines.
It is a new trend in auto technology. GPS, smartphones, and infotainment features are increasingly more complicated and potentially distracting to drivers. In many ways the new technology increases the drivers safety risks. With that, automakers are designing features to protect that. Rear view cameras to add an extra viewpoint when reversing. Handsfree blue tooth to talk on the phone. The extreme end of this would be self-driving technology, although only 59% of survey participants said they would feel comfortable riding in a car that drives itself.
What do you think about the results of the survey? Do you consider yourself a safe driver in Rockaway? What features do you think would help drivers stay safer on the road? We’d love to hear from you.
