New Jersey Daycare centers are synonymous with bright primary colors, learning toys piled up in corners… and iPads? It is a fact that smartphones and tablets have invaded our daily routines. But now, they are expanding into young children’s lives as well.
Children’s toymakers, from Fisher-Price to LeapFrog, Hasbro, and Crayola have partnered with digital media companies to create apps for very young children, according to a recent New York Times article. Deborah Weber, senior manager of infant research, discusses Fisher-Price’s product development, known as “spelunking” (literally, to explore caves).
“We bring babies in with their moms and watch them at play with different types of apps, different types of products.” Her job is to “understand the ages and stages of babies- what they can and can’t do, what their interests are, and the growing needs of families today.”
The article describes Fisher-Prices’ headquarters as looking more like Apple than your traditional playroom. There are infants staring at computer screens, and toddlers handling iPads with ease.
In addition to apps, multiple products have emerged to make the technology more enticing to infants and toddlers. The Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity comes in a monkey stuffed animal, with a teething-friendly case that holds an iPhone in their belly.

What is your opinion on integrating technology into very young children’s lives? Is it a sign of the digital integration of our culture, or something imposed upon them too soon? We’d love to hear from you.
