Every year, thousands of drivers across the United States will have an accident due to foul weather. The recent heavy rains along the East coast created conditions requiring extra care and an eye towards safety. Your Vreeland Insurance agent would like to remind you that whether you are driving in a drizzle or a blizzard, there are certain steps you should take to ensure a safe trip home. What is most crucial for drivers to remember is to slow down. Although we all have important errands and responsibilities, maintaining proper following distance and staying in the middle lane to avoid large pools of water can help to keep you from becoming a statistic. If you see pooling or running water, always drive around it. Just a few inches of moving water can sweep your car off the road.
One mistake that many drivers make is to brake suddenly or to turn the steering wheel in the case of hydroplaning. This can cause you to go into a skid. Instead, release the gas pedal slowly and steer straight until your car regains traction. If you do go into a skid, try to remain calm, ease your foot off the gas and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. If your car does not have anti-lock brakes, avoid using them and decelerate by keeping your foot off the gas. Finally, don’t forget to defog your windows, make sure your tires and wipers are in good condition and always use your headlights, even in a light shower. At Vreeland Insurance, our agents do everything they can to keep you and your family safe on the road and off.
